Paper

We believe that even the paper we print on should reflect our brand values. Our printed materials use sustainable paper stocks and have a natural look and feel. We prefer to use uncoated paper where possible and not to use laminates or UV varnishes. This helps avoid things looking too glossy or unnatural.

Recommended stock

We prefer to use recycled paper whenever we can. If this is not possible for specific print work then we should use paper stock from sustainably managed sources.

On Assembly publications we should use the appropriate version of the Recycled logo. If you are unable to use this logo or have your own environmental standard, then a suitable statement like the one below should be clearly placed all printed materials.  If you are not sure what to use, speak to your printer to obtain the correct wording, as different papers can have different statements.

Helpful tips

Using uncoated stock presents some challenges as the ink more readily soaks into the paper which can give a darker result than when using more typical coated stocks.

To help overcome this you may find some of the following advice useful.
  • Make sure your designer/agency/art worker are aware if the work will be printed on uncoated stock from the outset.
  • Speak to your printer to obtain paper samples, this will help you to get to grips with different textures available.
  • Once you have appointed a printer and know what paper stock you will be using it is recommended that you ask your art worker to contact the printer who will advise on the process used and dot gain so the files can be supplied in a way which minimises bleeding and over darkening.
  • Where time permits ask your printer for a wet proof.
  • When selecting imagery try to select images which are light, bright and colourful.
  • Avoid dark, overcast images or images with a lot of shadow.
